Chapter 7 Life In The States

Now that he had to pay more for the maintenance of an extra baby girl,thus cutting down his savings tremendously.He was adamant about his wife in refusing t assist him with all the bills especially that she has a job on her own.She flatly refused him and told him off.


Frantically he was anxiously trying to do many things extra to obtain a more sustainable amount of money for his savings but there was none except to perform more what he normally does.He wanted extra trips but was not available.The U.S.laws were extremely strict and over loading of goods were forbidden and punishable with hefty penalties and maybe banning from driving.


Without the driving licence would be fatal for him for without the work permit would be with drawn for good.That would mean that he had to cut down his own spending substantially.So no more going to see Susie on the way.

He had also wanted to go down into Les Vagas to see what were in there that attracted so many rich and famous there.That place was now beyond his reach.All he can now do was only to watch those beautiful neon colorful lighting from afar as he drove passed them on his numerous trips across that place.


Eating in restaurant was always too expensive for him so he always brought food from those sales van and small shops where they sold hot dogs and burgers.Most of his friend does the same.

His fellow drivers from Malaysia living together very often gambled away their earnings and many a times had to borrow from him.Of course he had nothing to spare so did not lent any away.His wife discouraged him to do so.In that way no money to lent many so called friends never were near to him.

He made many colored friends but the best friend was Ricky who often went around with him to new places assisting all the way.Ricky showed him many of those joins they came across along the way.Ricky was a member of the black brotherhood in the slump areas.

How fortunate of her?,two lovers taking good care of her.The husband that the baby was his,helped her in her daily washing of clothes as well as cooked for the family before he reports for duty.On the other hand her Boss avoided giving her heavy choirs and should there be any,he would rather accomplished them himself or delicate them to other work.

He had to beg his Boss to give him more trips to run.In many cases he was damn fortunate as many of the drivers often take unnecessary leave,forcing the Boss to give away their trips to other willing drivers to do the extra trips.

He was making to the extent of eight thousand bucks per month but the cost of maintaining his family cost him half the amount he earned.His wife as usual kept what she earned for herself.Actually cannot blame her for such behavior because her husband was not sparing her much spare cash to spent.

Her Boss anxious to marry her was extremely nice to her.She was holding back because his wife,a fat woman was very fierce and checking on him.Well,the Boss conceal their relationship very well not revealing anything to her.

Mei Zei was in many way smart in avoiding the marriage question for he knew very well that Tam could not divorce his wife that easily for she had the strangle hold on him.He built his fortune by marrying her in the first place.Her fortune assisted him to enlarge his fortune.He amy lose everything should he leave her.

The baby sitter has two daughters assisting her in taking the extra baby so it was never a problem to her.Beside them her sons also joined in to care for the two little girl.

In actual fact they never spent much time with them.They worked even on week ends.The husband doing the extra rips during the week ends and the wife worked extra checking stocks etc.with the Boss.Of course the Boss was giving her extra work so that he could be with her.She wa ever willing to please her Boss.

Chapter 6 Working In The U.S.

Chapter 5 Surveyng In The Ghettoes

They were meet by his Contractor friend at the New York International Airport.It was after a frantic search that his friend found him wandering around aimlessly at the airport,as the plane arrived much earlier then schedule.You know New York Airport was so huge running round itself was so laborious yet to look for some one new to that place is even harder.

In the end his friend found them and took them back to his house,where they were supposed to share with a host of other workers,all drivers of his friend.One thing all the drivers were males from Malaysia therefore not convenient with a female around.Anyway they temporary stayed until they could locate a more suitable place to stay.

In reality you know what happened at that New York International Airport.The airport was so damn huge and with so many people of all races racing around the Shorty was shocked till he turn blue black.After a long walk around he told his tired wife to sit on the luggage at corner while he ran around to find his friend who was supposed to be waiting for him.

Well,he was away for quite a while,leaving his poor wife looking very forlorn at a corner.One dark rugged looking gentleman took note of her presence and after sometime approached her.

"Hi ma'am,waiting for some one?',he quipped.
She looked at him a bit scare and therefore kept mum.and allowed him be.
But that tough guy was persistent,"He!ma'am,do you need any help",he asked.
Finding no reply he said,"He,Are you deaf?".
Again she looked away frightened for she had not talked to black guy before,horrified at his huge size.The man stretch his hand to help her up.At this she jumped up and screamed for help,drawing a lot of attention around with people looking at them to see what is happening.

The black man told them what happened.Finding that there was a misunderstanding they apologized to each other and the matter was settled.
The Contractor friend who was also from Malaysia took them to a traveling food stall,where they ordered a couple of hot dogs and warm drinks.

Residing with the rest of the workers where they were the sole married couple around was definitely no good,but Shorty Chong got to sort his job first.He soon found out that his driving license although International from Malaysia was not recognize by the Authorities there.

So they confiscated his driving license and made him re-sit for the driving tests there according to their requirements.It did not take place immediately for they issued him an appointment date for it.Without their approval he cannot drive around there.Instead of sitting around doing nothing waiting for the appointed date for his test his friend made him to travel with some of the drivers to get acquainted with the roads,road signs and the conditions in the states.

For that he was paid only a daily allowance by his contractor friend.In the meantime his wife moved around a little by herself and soon got a cheap flat where they can stay separately from the others.It was a small two room flat in the Ghettoes of black neighborhood.Many other races were among their residence.It was a stone throw from the China Town of New York.

The small flat was never impressive at first glance,very dirty and full of rubbish.The wife did not seem to be too bothered with those at least they had a better place to reside in away from all the other workers.Those drivers when having nothing to do will gamble all their income away,and that is something she would want her husband to avoid.

Without any hesitation they rented that flat and have cleaned and duly washed.Washed and rewashed they did and cleanse that place ridding off all the rubbish.No attempts to repaint the rooms as paints were costly and they had neither the cash to waste.

With ready they shifted in almost with immediate effect.The Contractor was agreeable to his move as it was rather for a married couple to reside with a host of bachelors.As they were new there they did not have much furniture for a start.So they stayed there as simple as possible.They only other things were newly purchased cooking utensils and some plates and cups,sufficient for their own used only.

When they moved in there she announced to him that she was two months pregnant.That news made him very happy and happily replied."Why so quick??? Come to think of it it is almost two months since we first made love"."Yeah",she replied.Within her she knew that could never be his baby.

The Proprietor was in his forties and assisting him were a few workers,mostly colored people and Mexicans.He took a long hard look at Mei Zie."what is your name?",he asked."Mei Zie,Sir and I am Chinese from Malaysia",she replied."Where???? Mallaaaaysia,what kind of place is that?'he asked ignorantly.visibly shaking his head a bit.

"It a country next to Singapore,Sir,"she replied."Singapore? Oh I think I know but I was told that people there lived on trees',he said."Where ? No Sir.We are quite like you all here only not so rich as your Country"."Never mind,so you want to work here - do you have a work permit?",he asked.

"No,no work permit",she replied."No permit cannot work here",he further replied.Starring at her,secretly admiring her good looks,"Maybe you can work here on a daily basis inside my store,help me unpack and packed some goods or so.When Authorities come along you pretend you were buying something but remember to tell them nothing".

"I know how to do accounting also,sir"she said."Oh,is that so? Very Good you can also help our account clerk sometime",he replied."Should you be good,I employ you as my clerk and then I will apply for your work permit.For a start you prove to me that you are efficient,okay",he quipped.

Looking at her fondly he again said,"I do not like your name,to make it easier for everyone let me think.................................yes I will re-name you Mary.Yes Mary had little lamp,how nice.That's it I call you Mary",he said."Up to you Boss",she replied joyfully.

She started work almost immediately as the super market was short of hands to help around.Business there was actually excellent.Therefore she was kept busy almost the whole day until the supermarket closed for the day.The happy Boss gave her $50/= for a start.That made extremely happy $50/= American money that means she got almost $ 150/= ringgit for per day's work."Wah !!! so much,should have come to America much earlier".


With that she brought some food home to prepare for the Shorty.He was not back then and she took her own time tom prepare a nice meal for themselves.When the Shorty came home later he was surprised at the food she had prepared."How come you got money to buy so much food??",he asked. "Oh,you think you can only earn money in America?I also can,I just got a job at the supermarket",she replied,"with almost a day's work the Boss just gave me $50/=,just imagine".

She was damn optimistic the Boss will apply the work permit for her,for she knew she had attracted the Boss attention towards her.So every day she dressed beautifully to work with make-ups and all to make herself looked good.Well.she impressed her Boss alright . She continued to work there every day and she proved to be an asset to the Boss doing all the odd jobs etc.,much to the pleasure of the Boss.The Boss's wife also had a good impression about her work,pestered her husband to apply a work permit for her.


Her husband on the other hand went for the driving test and passed it.Then he began driving around delivering goods every where,but an attendant had to follow him initially. His helper was a young black man.That young surely knew his way around.

Poor shorty was so stingy that he refused to give the lad following even a drink on the way,so that young man played tricks on him. At times he would misdirect him taking a long distance to deliver his goods so wasting a lot of precious time.Despite all these he was relentless and remained stingy.


Well,that worked against him because he was not delivering his goods on time and running less trips.In any case he was paid as per trip basis. The Contractor knew what had transpired and advised Shorty not to be so stingy. "Sometimes you got to be good to your attendant otherwise he will play tricks on you and when that happened you be the ultimate loser,think it over".


With that he came to his senses and bore with that lad until he is well acquainted with his roads. While performing their delivery of goods to far off towns ,many a times they had to return empty without goods to transport.On the way they would come cross many rubbish dumps.

My goodness these dumps at times had many useful items still in good conditions. So he stopped to check on those items.By such he collected a sofa for two and some chairs.He also collected a second hand mattress which was still serviceable.Only thing was he had to have them clean and slightly repaired.

There after he had a comfortable set of furniture,and completely free of charged. One thing lingers in his mind,that is was were those furniture haunted???.Oh no,no ghosts,but poor people were never afraid of ghosts.In fact ghosts scared them most. Anyway he had never seen an American ghost it would be good to meet one anyway.

At such dumps he also noted many Americans scavenging items for re-cycling and inquired to one them asking,"How much can you can scavenging through these dumps?"."Well ,it all depends what these dumps yielded,at times on a good day we can make about two to three bucks a day,and at times a hundred bucks",one replied.

Chapter 4 The Trip To The States

With the ending of all those ceremonies the newly married couple went up to the hill of Cameron Highlands for a honey moon.There was no luxurious hotel to encounter with but instead they spent their honey moon at her brother's farm house.

The farm house located at a vegetable farm.An extremely seine environment surronded by huge vegetable plots on all sides.They had the farm's dog for company.The brother at times stayed overnight there but most of the time he resided in the small town a little down the road.He and wife plus some workers will normally go there to harvest vegetables for the market early in the morning,

It was an extremely quite place for Shorty and his new wife,besides there was no expensive hotel bills to pay.Food and vegetables were a plenty and very fresh,Chickens and ducks were also available on the spot,most important those were free..It was certainly a good change for city dwellers but for how long?That the ultimate question.

For the first three days there were no problems as they enjoyed the fresh air and the rising sun but as days drifted by days became a longer and monotonous. for his new wife.She began to feel bored.Bored because they have to eat all greens most of the time
also the Shorty refused to eat in restaurant but only at "makmak' stalls where food is cheap.

Seeing his wife sad Shorty suggested they take trip to Penang and maybe also to Langkawi."can,it is alright but no eating at "makmak"stalls,then I go with you"."like that, got to spent a lot of money -no money lah",he replied."Then forget it",she replied.
"like that,huh?,then I think we go",wanting to make his wife happy.

So in a borrowed car they took the trip to Penang.In Penang he wanted to lodge at those cheap,cheap hotels in town but his wife refused to come down from the car."we are on honey moon and you want to stay in these cheap hotels,better drive me home",she retorted.

"Okay,lah! we go for a hotel by the sea side"and so they stayed at a sea side hotel and it cost him more than two hundred ringgit per night.Poor Shorty Chong had never spent so much for room before,this really gave him a big head ache.

Before long the date due for flying to the U>S>arrived and both boarded the plane for it.No,they never took the Malaysian Airways but the Qantas.They had anticipated a long flight so our dear friend Shorty brought along many beards and cakes."Aaya! all these can be brought in the plane?why you buy so much",he wife asked.

"In the plane very expensive,I was told.Can save better save,you know?',he replied.Seeing he so pumpkin his wife shut her gap and allowed it be.
After a distance flying his wife felt neasauting and vomited slightly.When he asked her why?.She said it was flying sickness.Should be okay should she rest a little.

Was she having flying sickness????.No,never,she was vomiting because she suspected herself to be pregnant.Cannot be I only slept with for about a month ago only.Baby could not be his.Yes,with her that pregnancy belonged to either her Boss or that no good dirty mouth Tan.

Whatever it was,she has to concealed it from Shorty Chong and pretending that to be flying sickness was the best option out.Maybe she though only after another half month I will notify him until then forget it.

Twelve hours passed and they were only half way there only,that was in Paris and the stopover was for two hours and his wife anxious to have a look at Paris but he ignored her plea such a stingy man.He refused because going a short round will be too costly,so they remained at the air port breathing the Paris air from there.

While she was alone sitting there waiting and he being away shortly a gentleman approached her,"Hi! sweetie,Chinese Baby,how about me taking you for a walk?",he asked.She smile back broadly at him.That man walked towards her and leaned forward to hold her hands.Shorty returned suddenly,asking what the man wanted?.

That man then retreated and walked away."All this white man very "ham sup"",he said as he walked towards her."No lah,you mistaken,he was asking where we are going,that was all.where got "ham sup".""You are worst off than him:.,she replied.

In the plane another incident happened while she was going to the wash room a dark complexion man rubbed her backside as she passed her seat.Amazed she placed her eyes on him."I am a sorry",said the man,"but you backside is so beautiful and big",he continued.She loved that for she replied,"Do it again,it was an accident".

Along the way she went to the wash room again with Shorty fast asleep.AS she came out of the room that dark complexion handsome held her tightly and kissed her passionately.They kissed for some lovely moments and then he let her off to return to her seat.

Poor thing that romance was short lived as that man had to leave at the next stop
for he had to board another plane on transit back to Timbakto.Before he left he left a love note for her with his next address requesting her to reply him in due course.Now did she response to his plea.Yes,she did.

The next stop was Hawaii,how wonderful.Alas they have arrived at a paradise.She was too eager to have a look at it.
